In France, 1 in 10 people is affected by kidney disease. This scourge continues to increase by about 2% per year. Our kidneys are essential to life. But when they malfunction, the warning signs can be subtle or even absent.
A Silent Disease
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a silent disease. The first symptoms only appear at an advanced stage of kidney damage. Every year, approximately 11,000 people learn that they have end-stage renal disease and must immediately begin dialysis to compensate for the collapse of kidney function.
The Importance of Early Detection
It is generally at a very advanced stage of the disease that people realize they are ill. Today, in France, more than a third of people are urgently placed on renal replacement therapy, such as a transplant or dialysis. Early detection allows for appropriate treatment that will slow down, or even stop, the progression of the disease towards kidney failure.
How to take care of your kidneys?
By eating a balanced diet to avoid being overweight. Obesity is a risk factor for kidney disease. By drinking enough water (at least 1.5 liters per day). By not smoking. By not eating too much salt and being mindful of overconsumption of ready-made meals.
Informing and raising awareness among patients
For the 21st consecutive year, France Rein is organizing National Kidney Week to inform and raise awareness about chronic kidney disease and to offer free screenings throughout France.
