Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in the European Union, with nearly 1.7 million deaths each year. Faced with this situation, the European Commission aims to strengthen prevention by proposing mandatory health checkups for all citizens.

The EU recommends an initial examination before the age of 35, including blood pressure and blood tests, with closer monitoring in cases of family history. Between the ages of 35 and 64, it recommends regular checkups at least every five years, incorporating assessments of lifestyle-related risk factors, mental and reproductive health, as well as kidney and respiratory function.

From the age of 65, Brussels is considering more frequent checkups (every three to five years) with more in-depth examinations, such as electrocardiograms. The goal is to detect earlier these conditions, which already affect 62 million Europeans, even though their risk factors (hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, obesity) are widely known and often preventable.

European Commissioner for Health, Oliver Varhelyi, emphasizes the importance of intervening from a very young age, particularly in light of the rise in smoking, vaping, obesity and sedentary lifestyles among younger generations.
